Object Identification
- Object name: Parchment indenture detailing the shared subscription of £100 in a spinning mill at Louth
- Date: August 1810
- Owner: Louth Museum
- Dimensions: L 61.4 cm x W 50 cm
Object Summary
The Indenture shows how legal practices of that time worked, like the property rights, and the economic relationships between mill owners, workers, and investors. At the bottom of the parchment there is a red line and a jagged cut, this was done so that both parties could leave with an identical document that could only be matched up with the original other half. The jagged cut means that both parchment pieces must match up perfectly and this helped avoid any scam or false documentation. The parchment also contains Ion gall ink which is extremely corrosive as it can oxidise the paper, leaving holes and staining the parchment.
