Summary
I found out about conservation during lock-down when I stared watching videos on YouTube, then when I found out I could study conservation at university and work with heritage objects, I decided it was what I wanted to do. I love being able to say I am a part of the history of the objects I have worked on and that the treatment I carried out allows an aspect of heritage to be enjoyed by others. My favourite materials to work with are textiles, paper and wood but I especially love it when I can research into an object’s personal story and learn about its past owners. Through university experience and my placement at Lincoln Archives I have had the opportunity to work with objects and materials with interesting and heritage rich stories.
Career Aspirations
After graduation I would ideally go into a conservation internship where I could continue to learn and gain experience in the field. I would like to gain more experience working on the materials which interest me the most. Eventually I would like to work as a conservator in a large museum amongst a team of fellow conservators.
Personal Reflection
As well as learning the practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to become a conservator the course has definitely improved my self-confidence in my own knowledge and ability to express a professional opinion to others in the field.
Other Projects
Through my second-year placement with Lincoln Archives and volunteering at small museums I have learnt skills needed when working in a professional environment such as customer service in the heritage sector, communication and interview skills.
