Summary

I have always been interested in history, conservation and restoration but never had the option of attending university when I was younger, as well as not knowing that such a course existed! A couple of years ago I found myself in a position where I was able to attend university and found this course which seemed ideal for me with its practical, hands-on approach. I have a background in a wide range of crafts including ceramics so this drew me towards working on ceramic objects, as I especially enjoy the challenge of reconstructing lost areas and colour-matching. However, I also enjoy working on a wide range of objects/materials and the different challenges they present, as well as researching their stories and background, as social history is of particular interest to me.

Career Aspirations

Currently I have no definite ideas about where I would like to work, however following graduation I will be looking into possible intern opportunities or volunteering to further my experience and skill set. I would ideally like to eventually work as a hand-on conservator as I enjoy the hands-on aspect of conservation and the satisfaction of seeing an improvement in the condition of an object following treatment.

Other Projects

During my second year I undertook a placement at the university with Phillip and Lynda Skipper who are conducting research into the bioreceptivity of limestone for conservation purposes. This placement helped me to build on my scientific skills and gave me an insight into a different aspect of conservation.

I have also undertaken work with a friend of mine who runs a freelance conservation company, including assisting her with research and also with repainting the sign of the Castle Hill Club in Lincoln.

I spend a lot of time walking over a nearby Victorian dump and looking for discarded objects. This has provided me with some interesting finds which I enjoy cleaning up and researching.
