Summary
My passion for art and art history, combined with my interest in science, led me to pursue conservation. Watching programs such as Fake or Fortune? and Secrets of the Museum introduced me to the field, highlighting how conservation merges scientific analysis with artistic heritage. I was particularly fascinated by the process of uncovering hidden details in artworks and the importance of preserving cultural objects for future generations. This passion deepened as I gained hands-on experience, including working on a paper-based object – a material I am eager to explore further.
Studying Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of Lincoln has provided me with invaluable experience in both preventative and interventive conservation. Handling a variety of cultural objects has expanded my practical skills and enhanced my appreciation for the complexities involved in preserving historical materials. I enjoy the challenge of treating each unique object and the satisfaction of seeing the final result. This experience has reinforced my commitment to conservation, inspiring me to continue developing my expertise in this field.
Career Aspirations
Following my studies at the University of Lincoln, I plan to pursue a Master’s degree specialising in painting or furniture conservation. My long-term goal is to gain professional accreditation and secure employment within a conservation facility to advance my expertise in a professional setting. This could include continuing my work at National Trust properties or private conservation firms. As I develop my experience, I may transition into freelance conservation work as I progress in my professional career.
Other Projects
During my second year, I undertook my Conservation Placement module at Belton House, a National Trust property in Grantham. I trained alongside collection assistants as well as regional and remedial conservators. This experience consolidated my passion for heritage objects, particularly in their extensive collection of classical oil paintings and wooden furniture. My time there offered a variety of experiences to work alongside skilled freelance conservators from various specialised areas. These opportunities greatly improved my experience in areas that aligned with my skill set and in which I want to progress in my future career in this field.
