Billie Newton

Summary

I chose the course due to my interest in art and heritage, discovering conservation through art history books and conservation videos online, and wanting to do a degree that involves practical learning. With a background in art, I started this course knowing little about conservation, and during my time on the course I have enjoyed working with a range of painted materials and being able to analyse the pigments, colour match missing areas, and treat the objects. I have also loved being introduced to materials and discovering new interests, such as gilt frames, fabrics, and ceramics.

Career Aspirations

I would love to gain more practical experience working with easel paintings and painted surfaces in order to eventually become an art conservator. However, I am interested in a range of materials and would also like to explore more work in collections care and historic homes after graduation.

Other Projects

During second year, I did a placement at Lincoln Cathedral with the curator. I learnt about and carried out archival work, cataloguing objects and documents digitally, treasury and collections care, and applied preventive conservation. I really enjoyed being able to experience working in collections management and understanding the use of conservation in a curatorial role. During the summers I have undertaken a placement and volunteering in different areas of the heritage sector, completing a placement with Historic England working on digital accessibility for the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, and most recently being a room steward at Kelmscott Manor. These opportunities expanded my interests within the heritage sector and introduced me to new ideas, such as my time at Kelmscott Manor inspiring my dissertation topic.
